Hi,my son was diagnosed with severe autism (by scores) but probably functioning moderately (by behavior), at age 3. At the time that he was diagnosed he had every symptom in the book, hand flapping, repetitive behavior, no speech, tantrums, behind in both gross and fine motor skills and many more. He is now 5, and has been receiving several therapies in a school setting since the age of 2. He is almost to age appropriate level, and to most people they wouldn't even notice.

I took him to a new doctor today because we recently moved to a different town. She immediately asked how he was socially, without being aware of his diagnosis and i told her he has autism and the therapies and intervention he is receiving. She said she could tell that he was behind by the way he answered the questions she was asking him ( like his birthday, where he lives, etc.) She then proceeded to tell me that she doesn't think he has autism anymore and that i should have him re-evaluated and it might be something more like Aspergers. So here is my concern... can you go from Autistic disorder to Aspergers? from what i have read, you cannot be both, and Aspergers has no delays in speech which he has always been his worst area. I understand that he is functioning well now, he does still have a few things that he is working on, like word retrieval, but its not possible to go from where he was to having Aspergers right?

Im just very confused. Like most mothers, i was given a diagnosis and then dropped in the cold with nothing to go off of. I have had my son in therapy's for his delays, but still no education on his actual disorder. I am very bothered by being told that it has gone away, i do notice things in him that are still autistic like, and i dont feel like it has "gone away" or changed to something else.

Has anyone else had any questions about this, or known of similiar circumstances? Anything will help at this point. Thanks for reading my post!
