SAINT JOHN — A new provincial autism program is getting mixed reviews from people who work with autistic children and their families.

The Department of Family and Community Services announced Thursday, it is going to spend $2.8 million to help families with autistic preschoolers.

Families will be eligible for up to $20,000 for each child to pay for therapy programs.

The announcement is welcomed by Debbie McDonald at Saint John's Community Autism Center but she says it doesn't go nearly far enough. Her volunteer center handles thousands of calls every year.

"For our pre-schoolers, great. But for our kids living with autism today and for our adults living with autism today, we still have miles and miles and miles to go."

McDonald says autism cannot be cured, and older children and parents require far more support than they are getting.

McDonald also questions the province's ability to find adequately trained people to set up the programs.
