By Beth Sneller

For eight years, Indian Prairie Unit District 204 special needs preschoolers have attended classes in one central location.

Now, district officials say they need to look at the possibility of finding other places to house the youngsters.

School board members discussed at a facilities committee meeting this week the growing space needs of Prairie Children Preschool.

Currently, the preschool - which serves both special needs children and tuition-paying regular education children - has an enrollment of 590. An additional 235 children receive speech and language services.

The preschool occupies 19 inclusive classrooms and five self-contained special needs classrooms on the first floor of the district's administrative center in Aurora.

For every one special needs child in each inclusive classroom, there are three regular education children.

Judy Hackett, assistant superintendent for support services, said she's projecting the preschool will grow by 100 special needs students to about 317 over the next seven years.

That means the preschool will need an extra nine classrooms.

"Of course, it's challenging to project the exact number of students, because they haven't been born yet," Hackett said.

The district is required by state law to provide tax-supported services for special needs students.

Although Prairie Children Preschool doesn't have to include tuition-paying preschoolers in its program, excluding them would not free any more room, board member Mark Metzger said.

"We're not using any more space because of the model we've selected than we would otherwise," he said. "There can only be a certain number of special needs children per room, anyway."

In a November interview, Superintendent Gail McKinzie said building an addition to the District Education Center isn't an option, because the district doesn't have any more land to spare.

That means administrators need to find somewhere else to house those extra children.

Some school districts have built a separate preschool building, Hackett said, while others have used extra classroom space in elementary schools.

Board members said they need to look long and hard at the facts before they make a decision about how to handle growth at Prairie Children Preschool.

"As in-depth as we are going with space needs in the middle schools and high schools," board member Jeannette Clark said, "we need to do the same with the preschool."

The board will set a date for its next facility committee meeting at the Feb. 9 board meeting.
