Evening News 24.co.uk 06/02/2004

Worried parents in Norfolk are delaying vital immunisations for their children because of continuing health fears over the MMR vaccine, new figures showed today.

Doctors have warned parents they could be doing their children more harm than good by waiting until they were older for the three-in-one jab.

The unproven link between MMR and autism has led to a nationwide drop in the uptake of the jab, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella.

And it is feared delaying the jab could put children at far greater risk of contracting the potentially lethal conditions.

New figures show just 78.2 per cent of youngsters in the county were immunised before the age of 13 months – well below the Government target of 95 per cent.

The numbers were slightly up on the national average of 77 per cent, but had worryingly dropped from 83 per cent the previous year.

A spokeswoman for Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridge Strategic Health Authority said: "It looks like the drop between 2002 and 2003 in take-up of MMR 1 is a national trend rather than confined to just the East of England.

"We think this may be because parents still have concerns about the links between MMR and autism and are choosing to delay taking their children to get the jab until they're older."

MMR is given to children at 13 months of age and again before they go to school. The second dose protects anybody who did not respond to the first dose.

The jab is at the centre of concerns over a possible link to autism and bowel disease.

Nationally it has been warned that record numbers of parents are shunning the vaccine with uptake falling as low as 58 per cent in parts of London.

Dr Simon Murch was a member of a team which previously reported a possible link between the triple jab and autism.

He said he was now convinced there is no evidence of any risk from the MMR jab.

"An unprotected child is not only at personal danger but represents a potential hazard to others including unborn children," he said.

Dr Peter Brambleby, director of public health for Norwich Primary Health Care Trust, said all the balance of evidence was in favour of the MMR jab.

He said: "I am a firm believer it is the most sensible thing for a parent to do to prevent against a spread of mumps measles and rubella."
