MMR Posted by Sylvia on Friday, February 20, 2004 (20:48:19)

First Coast News 18/02/2004

By Melissa Ross

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- Eighteen-month-old Riley cries as she receives the MMR shot, to protect her from measles, mumps and rubella.

Like all the vaccinations Riley has received, the shot is thimerosal-free, meaning it contains no mercury; a known neurotoxin that some researchers believe can have a devastating effect on brain development.

Dr. Valerie Miles is Riley's Jacksonville-based pediatrician. At her practice, virtually all shots are thimerosal-free.

"I think as pure as we can make vaccines, that's what we should shoot for," she says.

A recent panel of the Institute of Medicine heard testimony both supporting and rejecting the theory that thimerosal-containing vaccines have contributed to rising rates of autism and other neurodevelopment disorders in children. The Centers for Disease Control plans to respond to the findings this spring.

Due to the growing controversy over a possible connection, thimerosal has been phased out of many vaccines over the past several years, but it is still present in some of them, including virtually all flu shots.

Miles says at least 50 percent of the parents who visit her office have questions about thimerosal and vaccine safety in general.

"I don't want parents to be afraid to vaccinate their children," she says. "We support the vaccination program. But there is a biological component to thimerosal and its effects on developing brains, that I think hasn't been recognized in the past. So parents should check the product insert in each vaccination if they want to make sure their child's shots are thimerosal-free."
