Not a lot of people can say their child inspired them to start a new business venture, but Kristine Maier can.

Her 5-year-old son, Noah, who is autistic, inspired her to open Mower County's first day care for children with special needs.

Maier, who will open the day care in her home on April 1 in Sargeant, is licensed for 10 kids but can have more. Her day care will specialized in caring for children with special needs.

"It's hard for people to understand what kids with special needs are really about and a lot don't understand what they need and how to accommodate them," Maier said.

Maier knows all too well the difficulties in finding day care for a child with special needs. And since joining the R.T. Autism Awareness Foundation in Rochester and meeting other parents of children with special needs, Maier decided it was time area parents could bring their child to a place that would accept and understand the special attention and care their children need.

"I know what parents who have children with special needs want. Sometimes they don't get that from a regular day care because the provider doesn't know anything about the child's problem or disability, or else the provider won't accept the child into their day care," she said.

When Maier couldn't find adequate day care for her son, she knew something had to be done. Those frustrations also inspired Maier to help not only her own child but also other children who weren't getting the type of attention or education they should be getting.

Maier said when her son Noah went to a regular day care he would often be left to play alone for hours without any interaction with other children. Because of his autism, Noah needed special attention in order to get him to socialize with other children. But in the end he wasn't getting the type of care he needed.

"Everyday interaction is different with kids with special needs. Providers don't know what the child needs unless they're with them constantly. I want to open a day care to teach these kids what they need to be taught," Maier said.
