Carlow parents worried that their children may be autistic are forced to wait up to two years for an offiparacial assessment because of ongoing delays by the Health Service Executive in appointing a senior psychologist.

Many Carlow parents are being left in this limbo while their child continues to deteriorate from this regressive condition.

“If you suspect your child is autistic or having development delays it’s 18 months to two years before you can even have be assessed,” stated Ms Janet Duminy, the chairperson of Carlow’s Autism Awareness Network.

“Autism is a regressive condition and it is only when a child is diagnosed that services like occupational therapy or speech therapy will be provided.

“Without diagnosis and therefore intervention what originally were mild symptoms or indicators can result in the child becoming more and more autistic,” Janet stressed.

“And it’s not just parents affected by suspected autism that are having this problem it’s children with developmental problems like ADHD and ADD,” she added.

The Health Service Executive South Eastern Area (HSE-SE) has provision for a senior psycholo-gist specialising in autism and another senior post dealing with disability assessment and intervention for the Carlow/Kilkenny Community Services region.

However both positions are currently vacant.

“The HSE-SE has been endeavouring, on an ongoing basis, to fill both vacancies,” stated a spokesperson.

“There has been difficulty in attracting a suitably qualified candidate for the disability assessment and intervention post. Following recent advertisement, the HSE-SE is in discussions which may result in the filling of the senior post in the autism team on a full-time basis,” he added.

The spokesperson confirmed that Carlow/ Kilkenny Community Services had contracted a private psychologist service to deal with priority cases and is in discussion with voluntary agencies regarding how other psychology needs will be met.

However this is little consolation to the parents who’ve contact Carlow’s Autism Awareness Network distraught given the ongoing delays.

In fact the current crisis is now so critical that the Network has considered taking the matter into their own hands and sourcing their own psychologist privately with the support of parents.

“It can be expensive going private but we are hoping that if there were a number of families together the costs won’t be as much,” stated Janet.

“I would encourage parents to contact the Network if this is an option they’d like to explore with no obligations on them to join the group,” she added.
