TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- This year, more than 24,000 children in the United States will be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder an umbrella term for a variety of disorders including autism
New guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that all children be screened for autism between 18 and 24 months of age. But how do parents know what to look for?

Nicholas Voss is a bundle of energy. But early on, his mother saw something different about his behavior.

"I would ask teachers, I would ask friends, I would ask day care workers, 'Is this normal? Is something wrong? Is that normal?'" his mother Stefanie Voss recalled.

A few months after his evaluation, Nicholas was diagnosed with autism -- a puzzling disorder that affects one in 150 children.

Now, a video clip of Nicholas is one of more than 100 in a video glossary at autismspeaks.org. It's designed to help parents see the difference between typical behavior and behaviors that may be a red flag for autism, like throwing tantrums for no apparent reason, performing repetitive movements like rocking or flapping hands, not seeking cuddling or attention, showing more interest in objects than people, and a lack of interest in playing pretend or make-believe.

"What we hope is it will help them understand behaviors that the child might be showing and know whether these are behaviors that they need to be worried about and that need to seek professional information about," said Amy Wetherby, Ph.D., an autism researcher and professor at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.

Thanks to early intervention, Nicholas has come a long way. There are still challenges, but day by day his progress touches his mom's heart.

"He's only 4, and I think his future could be very bright," Stefanie added.

Autism is more common in boys than in girls. The online video glossary is free, funded by Autism Speaks -- an organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism and raising money to fund autism research. The guide is not intended to be a diagnostic tool, only a guide for parents to let them know if it might be time to seek professional help.
